Oberthur Primary School Factions
Oberthur has four factions, named after significant Western Australian rivers.
The observed qualities of these rivers include Resilience, Spiritual Strength, Powerful Flow, Leadership, Connection, Growth & Foundation, Adaptability, Warmth, Grace & Beauty, Cultural Depth, Flowing Intelligence, Calm Strength, Practicality and Sustainability, which align effectively with our schools history and culture, Core Values and the Big Six Learning Dispositions.
Fitzroy (Red)
The Fitzroy River or Martuwarr, is located in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia. Its catchment occupies an area of 93,829 square kilometres. The river and its vast floodplains are of great spiritual, cultural, medicinal and ecological significance. The river was given its European name in 1838 after
Captain Robert Fitzroy.
Canning (Yellow)
The Canning River or Djarlgarr is a major Tributary of the Swan River in the Southwest of Western Australia. The Canning River received its contemporary name in after Captain James Sterling named the river after the British Prime Minister whose government facilitated the expedition and foundation of the Swan River Colony (Perth) in 1829.
Swan (Blue)
The Swan River or Derbarl Yerrigan is a major river in the Southwest of Western Australia. The river runs through the metropolitan area of Perth and drains the Avon and coastal plains, which have a total area of about 121,000 square kilometres. It was named after the black swans observed on its banks by the Dutch Explorer Vlamingh.
Murray (Green)
The Murray River is a river in Pinjarra, the south-west of Western Australia. It played a significant part in the expansion of settlement in the area south of Perth after the arrival of British Settlers at the Swan River Colony in 1829. The river is used for public water supply.
