Physical Education at Oberthur Primary School
At Oberthur Primary School, all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 participate in a 60-minute Physical Education lesson each week.
In addition, students in Years 5 and 6 enjoy an extra hour of Senior Sport, providing further opportunities to build teamwork, fitness and confidence.
Our Physical Education program is designed to be fun, supportive and developmentally appropriate. Pre-Primary to Year 3 students focus on developing fundamental movement skills through a variety of engaging activities and sports. From Years 3 to 6, students consolidate these skills and apply them in more complex game situations, learning tactics, strategy and sportsmanship.
In term swimming is a school-based swimming program for children from Pre-primary to Year 6, providing quality swimming lessons to ensure children develop vital swimming and water safety skills. In term swimming forms part of our school curriculum, with all Pre-primary to Year 6 classes scheduled for lessons. Pre-primary to Year 4 have lessons at a local swimming pool (Riverton Leisureplex). This curriculum focuses on developing swimming and water safety skills and Years 5 and 6 undertake their lessons at Cottesloe Beach. With a focus on building water safety awareness and basic swimming skills in an open water environment. Key elements include understanding beach hazards (like rip currents and marine life), learning to swim between flags and developing personal survival skills.
Our in term swimming programs are both designed to be progressive, with lessons structured into levels and stages, including those aligned with the Department of Education WA’s Swimming and Water Safety Continuum.
Throughout the year, we hold several whole-school carnivals including Swimming, Athletics, and Cross Country. Oberthur Primary School is a proud member of the South Canning Interschool Sports Association (SCISA). Students are selected to represent the school at SCISA inter-school events such as the Winter and Summer Carnivals, Cross Country, League Tag, and Athletics. We proudly participate in School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions in sports such as basketball, football (soccer), and orienteering. Oberthur Primary School is also a foundation member of the SSWA Football Competition, which began in 2003.

- Sports uniform: Faction shirts and sports shorts are to be worn on specific faction days and may be worn on Wednesdays.
- Footwear: Shoes need to be appropriately covering the student’s feet (i.e. no thongs, ugg boots, massage or surf sandals).
- Hat: The reversible school bucket hat must be worn for all outdoor activities. A “No hat, no play” policy does apply all year.
To support our Physical Education programme, it is important that students are appropriately dressed for activities.
This includes appropriate footwear, not sandals or thongs. All students are to wear faction sports uniform on specified days. Hats are available for purchase from the school uniform shop.
