Visible Learning

Oberthur Primary School has a research-based approach to teaching and learning, through a whole school commitment to Visible Learning. Our national recognition as a Visible Learning school is the culmination of more than a decade of pedagogical practices to support every student to be assessment capable learners.

In every classroom across the school, the language of learning is evident. Lessons are designed with clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria, which are visible throughout the learning process. Students engage with the ‘Big Six’ learner characteristics to describe their attitude towards tasks – Enjoys Challenge, Seeks Feedback, Is Reflective, Self-Regulates, Is Resilient and Collaborates & Cooperates. Merit Certificates are awarded to students at fortnightly assemblies who have demonstrated these dispositions.

All learning, whether academic, social or emotional, is accompanied by challenge. Oberthur students recognise these moments as opportunity to be in ‘the Learning Pit’ and have visible strategies to support them to move towards cognitive breakthroughs. Goal setting and reflection are key elements in motivating students to achieve their best, and engage in learning at a deeper level.

Data drives all decision-making at Oberthur Primary School, and improvement is at the core of our business. Teaching staff utilise proven impact strategies, ensuring cohorts of students achieve more than one year’s growth in an academic year. Currently, the best known method to increase student performance is Teacher Collective Efficacy, and it is for this reason that our Teaching and Learning Teams use data to set and monitor collective goals.
